Italy

Why Italy?

Land of la dolce vita (the sweet life), Italy is one of the world's best-loved destinations, and no wonder—two-thirds of the world's historical-artistic heritage is there. Tuscany alone possesses more artistic treasures than the whole of Spain, which is the second country in the world for cultural heritage.

Whether you crave culture, gastronomy, cutting-edge design, sybaritic pleasures, or simply the art of il dolce far niente—the sweet doing nothing—this is a country for lovers of all that is good in life. A visit to Italy is a lesson in living well. Open-air vegetable and fruit markets, neighborhood bakeries and fresh cheeses made daily are fixtures of Italian life.

Tradition reigns as neighbors still meet in the piazza to discuss the day, laundry is still line-dried, even in the largest of cities, and the passeggiata (leisurely stroll) is still made in the evening air—preferably with a gelato in hand. From the mountains to the coasts, the emphasis is on simple pleasures and high quality.

Best Time To Travel

It's best to visit Italy mid-April to mid-June or mid-September to the end of October, when the days are usually in the 70-80s F/20-32 C, with nights in the 50-60s F/10-20 C. July, August and the first half of September are generally quite hot (high 90s F/34-37 C), humid and very crowded with tourists.

The winters in the north are chilly—50s F/10-15 C or colder in the day and much colder at night (often below freezing). In the south, winters are milder, but you'll still find it too cool to lie on the beach or too drizzly to tour happily.

The best time to drive the Amalfi Coast is May to mid-June and mid-September to mid-October, when there are fewer cars on the road. Take a sweater for evenings year-round.

Thailand

Why Thailand?

Thailand offers something for everyone from fabulous architecture, diverse hill-tribe villages, ancient ruins, beautiful islands, excellent shopping, and all the amenities as well. The balance between comfort and excitement is up to you: Stay at a five-star hotel or trek through the jungles; eat at gourmet buffets or buy fruit from local vendors; shop in glitzy malls or wander through outdoor markets. Thailand offers a curious mix of the ultramodern and the simply delightful.

Among the main attractions of Thailand are beaches, snorkeling, scuba diving, temples, ruins, hill-tribe culture, trekking, fine handicrafts, excellent food, nightlife and very friendly people.

Thailand will appeal to anyone who is interested in beach vacations, shopping, eating or archaeology, but especially to those who want to explore different cultures without sacrificing modern conveniences.

Best Time To Travel

The weather in Thailand is mostly hot and humid, although the northern highlands are generally 10 F/5 C cooler. The best time to visit is November-February, when the days are milder and the nights are cooler. March and April are especially hot, with average high temperatures in the mid-90s F/32-35 C. Avoid the monsoon season mid-May to October, when it's particularly humid and rainy (the streets of Bangkok flood easily), although those willing to chance it might get better rates at hotels. Downpours are intermittent rather than constant, so they generally do not cause major problems.

Singapore

Why Singapore?

Singapore is a small, diamond-shaped island country in Southeast Asia. With humble origins as a fishing village, Singapore has transformed itself into a dynamic, cutting edge city while still maintaining its historical and cultural charm. Singapore, having just celebrated 50 years of independence in 2015, is a young, vibrant country that has become a global economic powerhouse and top destination for Americans traveling to Asia. Singapore’s exotic landscapes contrast beautifully with stunning new sky-scrapers, ethnically diverse neighborhoods, a harmonious blend of cultures, verdant greenery throughout the island and a mouth-watering food scene that leaves nothing to be desired.

Best Time To Travel

Singapore has a tropical climate and receives a lot of precipitation year-round. Rainfall is most torrential between November and December, yet heavy rainstorms will occur throughout the year. The humidity on the island stays between 70% and 80% most of the time. Although you can visit Singapore anytime throughout the year, it is best to go between February and April when the rain isn't nearly as persistent.

Greece

Why Greece?

Located in southeastern Europe, Greece is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world—for good reason. It is a country with great, ancient history, one that gave birth to the concepts of democracy and philosophy, the Olympic Games, and drama, namely tragedy and comedy. With almost 2,500 islands, sea and sun are at their best in Greece: Spotless sands and clear-blue water abound. The landscape offers a picturesque variety, from whitewashed homes and blue-domed churches to neoclassical architecture and traditional authentic villages in the mountainous areas. The Greek cuisine will reward even the most demanding visitors and definitely those who appreciate simple and good quality food (after all, the famous Cretan diet is the cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet). The country's vibrant nightlife is famous and includes a great variety of clubs and bars.

Best Time To Travel

The Greek islands have a Mediterranean climate, with mild and rainy winters, and hot and sunny summers. The northern cities, located in inland areas of Epirus, Macedonia and Thessaly, have a slightly continental climate, with quite cold winters, during which air masses coming from the north can sometimes bring snow and frost, and hot summers, sometimes torrid.

Croatia

Why Croatia?

Friendly, picturesque Croatia along the Adriatic coast has so much to offer: good food, good wine, beautiful beaches, clean water, gorgeous scenery, historic cities, charming villages, striking architecture, Roman ruins, ten UNESCO World Heritage sites and well-preserved antiquities. Croatia occupies the largest area of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea which, as a part of the Mediterranean Sea, penetrates deep into the European continent. The narrow Dinara Mountain Range separates the country’s Mediterranean region from its central European continental section, which spans from the easterly edges of the Alps in the north west to the shores of the Danube in the East, encompassing the southern part of the fertile Pannonian lowlands.Croatia's main attractions are beaches, the medieval walled town of Dubrovnik, spectacular coastal and mountain scenery, picturesque towns, museums, ancient islands, lakes and waterfalls, historical sites, fishing, gorges, yachting, marvelous churches and monasteries, folk arts, fascinating culture, health spas, ten UNESCO World Heritage sites and the capital city of Zagreb.

Best Time To Travel

Croatia can be divided into three Climatic regions. In the north are the Pannonian Plains, lowlands with a continental climate of cold winters and hot summers. Central Croatia consists of the mountainous Dinara Region, which is covered with large forests and has an alpine climate. The Adriatic coast enjoys a Mediterranean climate of cool, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Winter temperatures range from -1 to 30°C in the continental region, -5 to 0°C in the mountain region and 5 to 10°C in the coastal region. Summer temperatures range from 22 to 26°C in the continental region, 15 to 20°C in the mountain region and 26 to 30°C in the coastal region.

Portugal

Why Portugal?

Sun-drenched beaches of the Algarve, exclusive golf resorts, medieval hilltop towns, colorful fishing villages, a cosmopolitan capital, the vine-filled valley of the Douro, wild remote mountains—Portugal has it all. But Europe's oldest country, which has had its eyes melancholically set on the sea and on a lost and glorious past, has turned its head toward Europe and is undergoing a profound modernization. Still, things move a bit more slowly in Portugal, devagar as residents say, and some 16 million tourists seem to like the pace.

There is no better way to experience Portugal than to sit down in a street cafe with a bica (espresso) or a glass of port as you watch the world go by. And when you leave Portugal, you will probably feel saudades (a feeling of longing for something that is gone but might return). But unlike King Sebastian, you can always return.

Best Time To Travel

The climate of Portugal is temperate and influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. In the north, the weather is cold and rainy, while moving south it becomes gradually warmer and sunnier; in the far south, the region of Algarve has a dry and sunny microclimate. In the interior, on the border with Spain, the climate is a bit more continental.

In summer, the Azores High protects Portugal, so it's usually sunny everywhere. However, a few weather fronts can still affect the northern part of the country. In the rest of the year, and especially from November to March, rainfall can occur, especially in the north where it is more frequent and abundant. Therefore, the landscape in the north is green, while it gradually becomes arider towards the south, down to Algarve, which has a relatively dry climate.

Seychelles

Why The Seychelles Islands?

Located in the Indian Ocean, about a thousand miles off the east coast of Africa, the Seychelles’ remarkable location and natural abundance cannot be compared to any place else on the planet. And as the home of the Vallée de Mai, said to be the original site of the Garden of Eden, the stunning Seychelles might just be the most heavenly place on earth.

Formerly a closely-held secret of celebrities and the mega-rich, this pristine island nation is slowly being discovered by travelers with a taste for luxury and exotic natural beauty. Uninhabited until the late i8th century, then settled by the French, the islands are a successful fusion of East and West in a colorful and harmonious Creole nation where English and French are spoken along with Kreol. With nearly 50 percent of the archipelago set aside as a national park, these are islands where simplicity, authenticity and innocence thrive, where luxury gently rubs shoulders with primeval forests and powder-soft white sands.

Best Time To Travel

The climate, while hot, is nearly perfect year-round. The islands are not in the cyclone/monsoon belt, so high winds and heavy rains are rare. There is, however, a rainy season November-January. If that's the only time available, by all means go (it's still sunny enough for sunbathing). The humidity is high, but a breeze usually keeps it tolerable.

The best time to go depends on what you want to do. The diving is best March-May and September-November. Bird-watching is best April-October, and the fishing is best October-April.

St Lucia

Why St Lucia?

The Caribbean island of St. Lucia possesses a wealth of natural beauty—lush mountains, a steaming sulfur volcano, 19,000 acres,of rain forest that's nearly 35% of the country, charming black- and white-sand beaches, rare colorful foliage and exotic wildlife. Add to this mix the pleasant St. Lucia weather and the nice beaches, and it's understandable why it is a popular destination.

There's plenty to do on this small island.  The rain forest is an ideal place for hiking, mountain biking, bird-watching or standing near a waterfall to soak up the mist from its spray. There's also whale- and dolphin-watching, snorkeling, kite-sailing, fishing and diving.

Vacationers who go to St. Lucia travel there generally for two distinct reasons: either to enjoy its charm and undeveloped feel, still found in some places, or to luxuriate in five-star waterfront luxury. Whether visitors stay in a deluxe, all-inclusive resort or a local inn or hotel, St. Lucia and its residents extend a warm welcome.

Best Time To Travel

December-May is the driest and coolest time, with day temperatures in the 70s-80s F/23-32 C and night temperatures in the 60s-70s F/15-27 C. During the hottest time of year (June-August), daytime temperatures can reach the 90s F/32-37 C.

The rainy season is June-November, but don't expect a constant downpour. Rather, there are numerous short but incredibly intense showers. Trade winds provide breezes year-round, regardless of the season.

Jamaica

Why Jamaica

From each morning's glorious sunrise until the sea swallows the sun at night, Jamaica presents a magnificent palette of experiences, a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds that make this island the most precious jewel in the Caribbean. A land of unique culture, engaging activities, breathtaking landscapes, and a warm, welcoming people.

The beat of reggae. The searing smell of jerk over the fire. The swizzle of rum in your glass. No place on earth provides the range of attractions and the cultural diversity that can be found here. No place on earth feels like it. No place on earth shines like it. Jamaica, the home of rhythm and sway.

Best Time To Travel

In Jamaica, the climate is tropical, hot all year round, with little difference between winter and summer (just a few degrees). Even in winter, daytime temperatures are around 27/30°C (81/86 °F) and night-time temperatures around 20/23°C (68/73°F). The southern coast, where Kingston is located, is slightly warmer in the winter months, in fact, the maximum temperature is around 30°C (86 °F) even in January.

The best time to visit Jamaica as a whole, whether you intend to visit cities and go on excursions, or to swim and sunbathe, runs from January to April. In fact, it is the driest and coldest period.

Hawaii

Why Hawaii?

Home to the world’s most active volcanoes, the only royal palace in the U.S., and the welcoming aloha spirit—Hawaii is like no place on earth. Discover the glimmering ocean, emerald valleys, and golden sands; get lost in the spiritual beauty of the hula and find out how the warmth of Hawaii’s people wonderfully complement the islands’ perfect temperatures.

Floating all by itself in the middle of the Pacific, Hawaii proudly maintains its own distinct identity apart from the US mainland. Spam, shave ice, surfing, ukulele, and slack key guitar music, hula, pidgin, aloha shirts, 'rubbah slippah' (flip-flops) – these are just some of the touchstones of everyday life, island style. Pretty much everything here feels easygoing, low-key, and casual, bursting with genuine aloha and fun. You'll be equally welcome whether you're a globe-trotting surf bum, a beaming couple of fresh-faced honeymooners or a big, multigenerational family with rambunctious kids.

Best Time To Travel

Generally speaking, the state of Hawaii is tropical, but the temperature and climate can vary dramatically depending on where you are located on a particular island. Temperatures at sea level in Hawaii range from highs of 85-90°F (29-32°C) in the summer to 79-83°F (26-28°C) in the winter. The temperature rarely rises above 90°F (32°C) or drop below 60°F (16°C) except at higher altitudes.
